Foldable compost toilet cabin — closed

The assignment for the bachelor's thesis involved designing a compost toilet for a specific context. I chose to do this for fan villages with a capacity of up to fifteen thousand supporters. The design I created is a foldable cabin that contains three units. The three toilets share a common tank where the waste is collected. After use, the tank can be easily emptied and cleaned. In this process, I primarily focused on the folding mechanism of this cabin. This system ensures that the cabins measure only half their volume when folded. This was my main logistical driver.

The system behind the foldable cabin had to be rethought quite some times. After deciding on what system I was going to use, I conducted a technical verification to verify whether the system would be able to work and what parts and materials I was going to use. In case of interest, you can always read the whole verification here.

Here you can see the process of setting up one unit. The foldable cabin deploys. While it does so, a cover deploys as well. After the automatic deployment, a human interaction is required to put the cover flaps and the sidewalls in place, afterwards the tank needs to be filled up with oats.
